Will Konsta Helenius put together a breakout year for the Sabres in 2026-27?
In a recent article for The Hockey News‘ main site, Michael Traikos discussed five breakout candidates for the 2026-27 season. The Buffalo Sabres’ top prospect was among the players listed, as Konsta Helenius made the cut.
It is not too difficult to understand why Helenius has been named as one of the NHL’s top breakout candidates to watch for next season. The 2024 first-round pick has a ton of potential and took a notable step forward in his development this past season.
During his first season in the AHL with the Rochester Americans in 2024-25, Helenius recorded 14 goals and 35 points in 65 games. Overall, he was solid during his first AHL season, but he became a star in the AHL last season for Rochester. In 63 games with the Amerks in 2025-26, he recorded 21 goals and 63 points.

Helenius was rewarded for his strong AHL play last season, too, as he made his first appearances at the NHL level with the Sabres in 2025-26. In nine regular-season games with the Sabres last season, he posted one goal and four points. He also scored two goals in four playoff games with Buffalo
Overall, Helenius has already shown a lot of promise early on in his career. If he can take that next step and emerge as a key part of the Sabres’ top nine next season, it would be significant. The potential for him to hit the 40-point mark at least next season should not be ruled out, as the youngster has plenty of promise.
It will be interesting to see what kind of season Helenius can put together for the Sabres in 2026-27. If he takes that next step, perhaps he could even compete for a spot on Buffalo’s second line and power play next season.
