New movies to stream
‘72 Hours’
Kevin Hart plays what today’s kids would call an “unc” in the new comedy “72 Hours,” premiering Friday on Netflix. Hart stars as a 40-year-old guy who joins a group of rowdy Gen Zers for a wild bachelor party after getting an accidental invite to the festivities. “72 Hours” also stars “Saturday Night Live” cast members Marcello Hernández, Ben Marshall, and Kam Patterson. ‘Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie’
Matt Johnson, who directs the new Provincetown-set Anthony Bourdain biopic “Tony,” directed and starred in “Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie,” arriving Friday on Hulu. The comedy is a follow-up to the mockumentary series “Nirvanna the Band the Show,” where Johnson and Jay McCarrol play fictionalized versions of themselves as they try to get their band booked at a Toronto venue. The new film adds a time travel element to their hijinks, sending the pair back to 2008. Available on Hulu
New TV to stream
‘Ransom Canyon’
From new installments of “King of the Hill” and “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” to the premiere of a “Big Bang Theory” spinoff, there’s a ton of new TV this week. Also returning is season 2 of the Texas ranch drama “Ransom Canyon,” now streaming on Netflix. Stars Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly are both back for the new season. Available on Netflix
Binge-worthy TV pick
Shark Week
Discovery kicks off its annual Shark Week programming on Sunday, starting at 8 p.m. with the new special “K-Pop Shark Heroes,” featuring “KPop Demon Hunters” stars Ken Jeong and REI AMI. Shark-themed shows will air on the network through Aug. 1, with Shark Week programming past and present also available to binge-watch on HBO Max. Available on HBO Max
Movie night pick
‘Mortal Kombat II’
I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun I had watching “Mortal Kombat II” in theaters earlier this year, with the action-packed sequel proving to be a bloody good time for fans of the video game series it’s based on. Karl Urban is a welcome addition as the joke-dropping and butt-kicking Johnny Cage. And while he’s underused in this movie, seeing the legendary Hiroyuki Sanada back as the mystical ninja Scorpion is a delight. Available on HBO Max
