Vt. (WCAX/Gray News) – A traveling nurse used their military-style techniques to help subdue a knife-wielding man last week
Leceadricke Young was leaving work at Elderwood Nursing Home last Friday when he said he saw a man grab a woman by her throat and slam her down
Young went to check on the woman along with a fire captain who also arrived at the scene. That’s when the man, later identified as 29-year-old Wayne Butchino, allegedly pulled a knife and chased the fire captain, with Young jumping into action
“In the process of him focusing on the fire captain, I just basically ran up behind him, grabbed his arm, and flipped him on the ground,” Young said
The good Samaritan successfully flung the knife out of Butchino’s hand using those military-style techniques he had learned in an explorer program as a teen in Mississippi
“I knew what to do; we know how to disarm, but I never thought I would have to use it,” Young said
Alongside working as a travel nurse, Young teaches such intervention skills to kids he mentors
“It’s just something you can pass on and just a great thing to learn, because you never know what could happen if you’re in that situation,” he said
Police arrived at the scene a few minutes later and arrested Butchino, who faces multiple charges, including attempted murder
