The first FIFA World Cup final halftime show had 11 minutes, more than 350 performers and apparently no interest in settling on one dress code. Madonna opened in pink Saint Laurent and corsetry, BTS arrived as a seven-man team in red, white and black, Justin Bieber played acoustic guitar in custom Skylrk and Shakira took the field barefoot in enough fringe to register from the upper deck
Madonna made her entrance through the stadium tunnels in a dune buggy driven by Brazilian football legends Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, then opened the show with a new version of “Music” incorporating elements of “Disco Inferno” and “Danceteria.” The two players flanked her in Brazil-colored tracksuits, one primarily yellow and the other blue, while went in a completely different direction

She layered a mauve Teddy jacket in satin crepe over a silver bra and a pink corset-style waist cincher detailed with straps and metal hardware. The jacket stayed open to reveal the lingerie construction, while the label’s pink mini shorts in silk habutai barely cleared the hem. Fishnet tights, lavender thigh-high stockings and Saint Laurent’s metallic leather Danceteria boots carried the palette to the knee. Wraparound silver sunglasses, layered necklaces and fingerless gloves supplied the finishing hardware. With “Danceteria” built into both the remix and the boot credit, the look did a little title placement of its own.
BTS took the football brief most literally for “Dynamite.” The K-Pop group came out in variations on a red, white and black soccer kit, with the details changing from member to member: jerseys, warmup jackets and bombers were worked with crests, stars, soccer-ball patches and lettering, then paired with everything from white cargo pants to red printed flares and loose black trousers. Combat boots and sneakers completed the lineup
changed both the tempo and the dress code for “Everything Hallelujah.” His custom Skylrk polo read as two layered tops, with a dark green short-sleeved body set over a white collar and sleeves. He paired it with the brand’s Raw Denim Shorts, a knee-skimming indigo style traced in contrast stitching
Skylrk Slouchy Socks bunched above a pair of unreleased Matter Daddy sneakers in the Latte colorway, while Speed Demon sunglasses in Jet supplied the narrow black frames. The brand also created Bieber’s audio earpiece and guitar strap for the performance, carrying the Skylrk credit from the clothes into the equipment
The outfit was casual. The earrings were not. Bieber wore Logan Hollowell’s $19,795 Reverse Water Drop Pavé Diamond Stuggies, a stud-huggie hybrid made in gold with approximately 2.46 carats of white diamonds
He has returned to the pair repeatedly over the past week, including at Skylrk’s new immersive retail experience in New York. The World Cup appearance followed a busy stretch for the label that also included a one-day Target Soho activation devoted to Skylrk Audio
Shakira brought the color back for “Dai Dai,” performed with Burna Boy and Uganda’s Ghetto Kids. Her crystal-studded bodysuit — a custom piece by Fausto Puglisi for Roberto Cavalli — moved between hot pink, orange and yellow, with a plunging neckline laced in narrow cords and large cutouts opening both sides of the torso. A high-low skirt made from long strips of coordinating fringe wrapped around the hips and trailed behind her
She performed barefoot, dancing as each turn sent the pink and yellow strips outward, while her dancers surrounded her in orange-and-yellow cutout costumes with their own layers of fringe. The matching pink microphone, which appeared to be covered in crystals, was almost beside the point, although it did complete one of the show’s most saturated looks
Produced by Global Citizen with Live Nation and Done + Dusted and curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, the performance supported the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. It ended with Emmanuel Kelly debuting “We Dance,” an original song alongside the PS22 Chorus, Coldplay and the Muppets
The first outing did not establish one World Cup halftime uniform. Madonna treated the field like a club, BTS like a locker room, Shakira like a dance floor and Bieber like a very expensive Sunday afternoon. For a show determined to cover nearly every musical lane in 11 minutes, the clothes covered every position, too
