The U.S. Food and Drug Administration updated its recall of more than 19 million eggssold at Kroger and other retailers linked to a multi-state salmonella outbreak with its highest risk classification, according to a report Wednesday.
The reclassification tags the recall with the most severe rating for potential health effects to consumers, posing a “reasonable probability” that the eggs would cause “serious adverse health consequences or death,” if eaten

An initial recall was issued by Midwest Poultry Services in July, after two Texas farms that service the company were identified as the

The eggs were linked to 98 salmonella infections across 17 states, according to a July 24 FDA update. The largest number of reported illnesses, 73, were in Texas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
The recall affected 1.6 million dozen white and brown cage-free eggs produced in Texas from June 6 to July 3, with best-by dates of July 20- Aug. 17, 2026, according to the FDA report.

The eggs were distributed to Kroger stores in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana, and Brookshire’s grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, and Mississippi, and smaller outlets
Midwest Poultry Services has since stopped distributing eggs produced on its Texas farms, according to the FDA’s original report
The recalled eggs were packaged in consumer and bulk sizes of 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36 and 60-count eggs
