The Washington Nationals announced Wednesday that right-hander Miles Mikolas was designated for assignment.

Mikolas’ spot on Washington’s roster goes to lefty prospect Jackson Kent, who will make his Major League debut today against the Chicago Cubs.
Mikolas, a two-time All-Star during his seven seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, is not the same caliber of pitcher he once was.
In 25 appearances with the Nationals, including 11 starts, the 37-year-old posted a 5.82 ERA and allowed 137 hits in 116 innings.
“Mikolas still has some of the best control in the league. He’s not going to put batters on with free passes, but he has well below-average raw stuff that hasn’t fooled hitters for a few years,” Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors wrote.

“Mikolas has had an ERA of 4.78 or higher in each season since 2023. He’s incredibly durable and ranked 13th in innings pitched between 2023-25,” Franco added. “His ineffectiveness has kept him from taking quite so significant a workload this year, as the Nats tried to keep him to two times through an opposing lineup — frequently behind an opener.”

Mikolas reached 10 years of MLB service time on Tuesday, so Washington was probably waiting for that milestone before making a roster decision.
The Nationals also recently released fellow righty Zack Littell, who hastily signed a contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
