As time passes, the NFL has evolved in several ways. Could we see the league alter its rules for long field goals in the future?
In a recent article, ESPN’s Michael DiRoccobroke down what several NFL coaches and kickers thought about the concept of making field goals of 60 or more yards worth four points. DiRocco cited the UFL’s use of the four-point field goal in 2026 and the success the league’s kickers enjoyed from longer distances

“I think it’s a little weird,” Aubrey told ESPN. “Kind of incentivizes you to stall the drive in a certain spot. It makes you really, really question your playcalling around that 50-yard line area. It’s interesting for kickers that have the leg to get it there, maybe [there’s] a little bit more value there. But kind of perverses the incentives of football where the goal is to get it as close to the other person’s half as possible.”
Aubrey added that he was conflicted on the idea since it would be good for kickers, but a “nightmare” for play callers
Throughout his NFL career, Aubrey has made a league record six field goals of 60 or more yards
According to DiRocco, NFL kickers attempted 22 field goals of 60+ yards in 2025. They made 12 of those kicks. In the UFL, kickers went 8-for-14 from 60+ yards after the four-point field goal rule was adopted
