Walmart (WMT) looks to be in the driver’s seat with cost-conscious shoppers
Quick insight:Walmart’s pricing perception has remained consistently above most big box peers like Target over the last three years, Goldman Sachs analyst Kate McShane wrote in a new note on Monday. Meanwhile, its Sam’s Club brand has maintained a similar perception to Costco (COST)
Walmart’s pricing favorability was 65.7% in June, compared to 64.9% from a year ago. Walmart’s value favorability has also modestly improved to 44.9% this June from 44.6% a year ago
“We look at pricing perception, which we believe is a forward indicator for traffic, as well as value perception,” notes McShane
Catch up: Walmart continues to cut prices this summer, while Trump has shone a spotlight on its acts
“Great news! I have just been informed that one of the biggest, best, and smartest Retailers in America, Walmart, will be lowering prices, by a lot, at my Administration‘s request to celebrate our great Country’s 250th birthday,” President Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on July 6
“Walmart will, in particular, be dropping the price for a pound of ground beef by almost 15%, among many other products,” the president added. “This is a huge deal for the many millions of Americans who, smartly, shop at Walmart, which is a truly patriotic Company who loves the U.S.A.”
Walmart had 7,200 price cuts across the business in the first quarter. About half of those were in food. The company’s leadership on price has driven its stellar financial results while others have struggled
Walmart delivered a resilient performance in the first quarter amid surging gas prices, generating total revenue of $165.6 billion, a 2.5% increase (4% in constant currency). Global e-commerce sales surged 22% year over year, thanks to the ongoing popularity of store pickup, home delivery, and its expanded online marketplace
In the closely watched US segment, comparable sales excluding fuel grew by 4.5%
Bottom line: Walmart could be headed toward an impressive holiday shopping season as it further solidifies its price leadership with shoppers
