The Nasdaq Composite was higher on Thursday as the latest earnings reports from Nvidia and other well-known technology companies boosted sentiment
The tech-heavy index rose 1.57% to 26,541.35, while the S&P 500 advanced 0.72% end at 7,730.99. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 105.56 points, or 0.2%, and closed at 53,569.44
It was the best day since Aug. 4 for the tech sector, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite
Nvidia shares jumped 8.7% after it beat analyst expectations and forecast strong revenue growth. Notably, the chipmaker is projected to see revenue growth hit 70% in fiscal 2028, far higher than the 44% that analysts surveyed by LSEG expected. Its revenue for the fiscal second quarter more than doubled
Loading chart
Shares linked to the semiconductor industry rallied, with Broadcom adding 4.5%, and SK Hynix and Intel up 2% and 4%, respectively. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) rose 3%
“There’s been a lot of talk lately about the circular financing for all these hyperscalers and whether revenues will be able to actually cover the huge costs that they’re incurring. Maybe this holds off that discussion for a little while,” said Melissa Brown, global head of investment decision research at SimCorp. Other names in the AI trade are “just riding [Nvidia’s] coattails,” she added
Outside of Nvidia and its fellow chip stocks, Salesforce rallied more than 22% after revenue came in ahead of Wall Street’s forecast for the second quarter. Software stocks such as Adobe and Autodesk climbed 5.7% and 6.2%, respectively
Within cybersecurity, Okta soared more than 28% and CrowdStrike gained 20.5% after surpassing analyst expectations and raising their outlooks as the companies see booming demand due to agentic AI. Other cyber stocks such as Palo Alto Networks rose alongside them. That stock in particular popped almost 13%
Brown noted that because there’s such a divergence between stocks related to the artificial intelligence trade and those in other areas of the market, there’s a low correlation across stocks that’s impacting risk
“The volatility is high, but the correlation is low, and so that’s keeping overall volatility low,” she said. “Our concern is that that kind of lulls investors into a false sense of security.”

J.M. Smucker blew past Wall Street’s revenue expectations for the first fiscal quarter, thanks in part to strength in its Uncrustables brand
The food producer posted $2.22 billion in revenue for the three-month period, exceeding the expectation of every analyst polled by FactSet. J.M. Smucker said it now expects full-year revenue to shrink less than previously forecast
CEO Mark Smucker said in prepared remarks that the Uncrustable brand saw 12% net sales growth
Uncrustables is driving momentum in the broader frozen handheld and spreads category, CFO Tucker Marshall said on the company’s Wednesday earnings call. The Ohio-based company is spending some of its tariff refund on pre-production expenses and marketing tied to the brand, Marshall said
“As you think about Uncrustables, that continues to be a great story,” Marshall said
J.M. Smucker shares have jumped nearly 8% this week, which would mark its seventh consecutive winning week. The stock has surged 38% in 2026, on track for its first positive year in four

GPU supply constraints will boost DigitalOcean, Truist says
DigitalOcean is using a constrained GPU market to fortify its business for the long-termÂ
The bank initiated coverage on the cloud infrastructure provider with a buy rating and a $175 price target. That implies a 52% gain from Wednesday’s close. In a Thursday note, analyst Miller Jump wrote that the company is making strategic moves amid an imbalanced supply and demand environment.Â
“Management has indicated that the supply demand imbalance is enabling them to handpick the customers that are most aligned with their long-term aspirations as a business,” Jump wrote. “We expect this to translate to large customers that are taking value-added software offerings like DOCN’s managed inference which could make them both stickier and higher-margin.”
Jump added that DigitalOcean doesn’t face the same financing risks as other companies in the GPU buildout, stating that the company isn’t looking to compete with hyperscalers but rather extend its “core value proposition.” Shares were higher by more than 5% in afternoon trading.Â

Citi upgrades Sociedad QuÃmica y Minera de Chile to buy
Citi analyst Alan Trebitsch on Wednesday upgraded shares of Chilean chemical company Sociedad QuÃmica y Minera de Chile to buy, from neutral/high risk, saying the attractively valued stock should get a boost from a recovering lithium market
“We expect lithium prices to strengthen through YE26, supported by battery supply chain restocking and resilient EV and BESS demand,” Trebitsch wrote. “Citi’s commodities team expects the market to stay in deficit in 2026 before returning to balance in 2027 as suspended capacity restarts and new supply enters the market.”
However, the analyst revised his price target slightly lower to $95, from $97 previously. The new price target still implies more than 20% upside from where the stock closed Wednesday, at $78.28. Shares were last up by 2%

Lower oil prices dampens chances for a September rate hike by the Fed, UBS says

U.S. oil prices remain above $80 per barrel, but their decline from late-July highs of above $90 makes the chances of an interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve at its September meeting unlikelyÂ
The bank’s chief investment officer for the Americas and global head of equities Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi wrote in a Thursday note that the bond sell-off has also been eased by the recent decline in oil prices. However, she added that high yields will likely remain so long as Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh continues to be cautious about giving long-term forecasts.Â
“The Fed has placed less emphasis on forward guidance, while markets are also considering the implications of a smaller balance sheet over time,” she wrote. “This increases uncertainty around the central bank’s reaction function and raises the compensation investors demand for holding long-duration assets.”
Warsh is set to deliver a keynote speech at the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium on Friday. CME’s FedWatch tool as of Thursday morning places nearly two-in-three odds the central bank keeps rates steady at its September meeting.Â

‘Now is the time to act’ on raising interest rates, Fed’s Hammack says
Beth Hammack, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, speaking with CNBC from Jackson Hole on Aug. 27, 2026.
David A. Grogan | CNBC
Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack on Thursday repeated her call for higher interest rates, saying recent inflation data show the central bank is still too far from its goal
A report released Wednesday showed inflation running around 3% on an annualized basis, the central bank policymaker said. Even though the monthly rates of price increases have slowed over the past few months, Hammack said the Fed should tighten monetary policy
“I don’t want to prejudge anything. But I believe now is the time to act,” she said in a live CNBC interview from the Fed’s annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyo. “I believe that we’ve been in an inflationary situation for more than five years. It’s been running well above our target. I don’t see any restriction in policy when I look at financial conditions and when I talk to market participants.”

China industrial profits growth cools to slowest in seven months at 11.2%
China’s industrial profits growth in July slowed to its weakest pace this year, expanding 11.2% from a year earlier, as soft demand and a broader slowdown in the economy weighed on manufacturers
For the first seven months of this year, profits climbed 17.6% from a year earlier, according to National Bureau of Statistics data released Thursday, loosing momentum following the 18.7% growth in the first half-year
Industrial corporate profitability, however, has seen a notable turnaround, swinging from barely positive growth last year to double-digit gains this year. That recovery was largely helped by a global artificial intelligence boom that fueled demand for computing and electronics equipment manufacturing
