University of Chicago bans use of phones laptops for law students to curb AI use

CHICAGO (WLS) –The University of Chicago takes on tech. The school is making changes for some students, designed to curb the use of AI
Beginning this fall, first year law students at the University of Chicago will be banned from using phones, tablets and laptops in class. This is a new policy at the university to curb AI use

In 2023, the university’s law school says it created an AI committee
Some of the feedback that was received is that the university wants to ensure students learn to think critically, strategically, and independently without relying on artificial intelligence
The university will teach students AI, but that will be in upper level courses
Faculty will be able to experiment and develop their own AI policies for elective courses, however phones and laptops will still be banned for test taking
There will be some exceptions to this new policy, professors can assign a student to use electronic devices to take notes for the class
Those who have disabilities and need accommodations will be except from this rule
