Va. (WVVA) — Gov. Abigail Spanberger is urging eligible Virginia families to apply for the state’s SUN Bucks program before the August 31 deadline
The summer nutrition initiative provides a one-time $120 grocery benefit per eligible school-aged child
While more than 628,000 Virginia children have already received the benefit since its June launch, state officials estimate that thousands of eligible children have yet to be signed up out of an expected 705,000 statewide
“Virginia families are feeling the strain of rising grocery costs, particularly as a reckless war and chaotic policies are driving up prices and threatening Virginians’ ability to put food on the table,” Spanberger said. ”Congress made the largest cuts to food assistance in history last year, but here in Virginia, we are using every tool we have to keep kids fed.”
SUN Bucks can be used to purchase fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy and meat at any retailer that accepts SNAP EBT, including grocery stores and farmers markets. Families can also double the value of their benefits on fresh produce through the Virginia Fresh Match network
“Connecting eligible children with SUN Bucks means more Virginia families can afford nutritious meals during the final weeks of summer,” said Virginia Department of Social Services Commissioner Duke Storen, noting that a new online application has streamlined the process for applicants
Households can apply online at www.fna.usda.gov/sebt, submit a printed application by mail or call the SUN Bucks Call Center at 866-513-1414
