The build-up to the start of the 2026 NFL season is reaching a crescendo on Thursday. For the first time since the Seattle Seahawks beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 60, a game will be played between two NFL teams
The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers are squaring off in the NFL’s annual Pro Football Hall of Fame game to kickstart the NFL preseason
Per usual, few starters are expected to be on the field for the preseason opener. The Panthers will sit starting quarterback Bryce Young, among others, while Jeremiyah Love – the Cardinals’ No. 3 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft – will also be out of action for the contest
Nonetheless, NFL fans will relish the return to the field and a chance to see rookie quarterback Carson Beck in action for the first time
While the Cardinals and Panthers are gearing up for their battle, the NFL’s remaining 30 teams will be at least a week away from their preseason debuts. Among the top storylines to watch will be Aaron Donald’s potential return to the Los Angeles Rams, as the 35-year-old officially worked out for the team Wednesday
A plethora of extensions have been signed in recent days as well, so fans will want to keep a keen eye on Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs as he looks to match, or exceed, the three-year, $75 million deal Bijan Robinson signed earlier in the week

Jonathan Taylor contract details: Colts RB gets paid
The Indianapolis Colts and running back Jonathan Taylor agreed to terms on a two-year, $44 million contract extension, according to multiple reports. Taylor, 27, was entering a walk year in 2026, but his new deal keeps him under contract in Indianapolis through the 2028 season
Taylor’s extension comes two days after the Atlanta Falcons agreed to terms with their own star running back, Bijan Robinson. With both Taylor and Robinson getting their new deals done, Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs – who is holding in at training camp – is the last tailback waiting for his pay day
