Minn. (Northern News Now) – TheLake Superior Zoois hosting Wellness Wednesdays through August, opening its gates early each week to give visitors a chance to exercise among the zoo’s animals
Guests can walk, jog, or run on more than a mile of paved trails inside the zoo during the weekly event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. every Wednesday
Zoo Executive Director Noah Hobbs said the program is designed to bring more community members through the gates and offer an alternative to a traditional gym setting
“Also, make moving more fun than maybe just going to your gym every single day, kind of break up that monotony to come out here and go for a jog or walk around, and then also experience some of the over 300 animals that we have here in our care as well,” Hobbs said
The zoo has also partnered with community bakers to provide free food and coffee before visitors exercise through the zoo. Hobbs said having food and drinks available “limits barriers for people coming in the morning”
Essentia Health family medicine APRN Erika Ehlers said morning walks and exercise are a great way to improve overall health, including cognitive health, lower stress, and strengthen the immune system
Entry to Wellness Wednesdays is free to all, made possible through a partnership with Essentia Health
