General Motors reported second-quarter revenue of $48.03 billion and adjusted earnings of $3.57 per share on Tuesday, topping Wall Street expectations and prompting the automaker to raise several full-year forecasts for the second time in 2026
Wall Street had penciled in adjusted EPS of $3.20 on revenue of $47.01 billion
On the upside, GM’s updated full-year targets now call for adjusted EBIT of $14 billion to $16 billion and adjusted EPS of $12 to $14, both shifted $500 million higher than the previous ranges of $13.5 billion to $15.5 billion and $11.50 to $13.50, respectively; adjusted automotive free cash flow guidance also moved up by half a billion dollars to $9.5 billion to $11.5 billion. Partially offsetting those improvements, GM trimmed its net income attributable to stockholders target to $8.4 billion to $9.8 billion from the already-reduced prior range of $9.9 billion to $11.4 billion, reflecting charges the company has recorded so far this year.
North American operations drove the quarter’s performance. GM’s North America segment posted adjusted EBIT of $3.45 billion, up 42.7% from the same period a year earlier, with an adjusted margin of 8.6%. Company-wide adjusted EBIT rose 29.8% to $3.94 billion
Net income attributable to stockholders fell 31.1% year over year to $1.3 billion, weighed down by ongoing charges stemming from the company’s retreat from electric vehicle spending
GM CEO and Chair Mary Barra pointed to stable pricing, a compelling roster of pickup trucks and SUVs, declining warranty expenses, and shrinking EV losses as key tailwinds. The automaker’s average transaction price held at $52,000 for the quarter. GM also reported that digital services revenue climbed 20% and that its EV loss reduction remains on track to reach $1 billion to $1.5 billion versus last year
GM indicated it has largely wrapped up the accounting charges associated with its EV retreat, with the cumulative bill reaching $10.9 billion since late last year. Of the $7.2 billion in cash outlays expected in connection with that pullback, $4.5 billion had been disbursed by the end of the second quarter
GM also declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.18 per share on its common stock, payable September 17 to shareholders of record as of September 4, the company said
GM has been reducing costs across multiple areas of its business. The automaker cut 500 to 600 salaried information technology jobs earlier this year as part of a broader workforce restructuring, with the reductions centered in Austin, Texas, and Warren, Michigan
