The fast-growing data center industry is creating new business opportunities for Southwire, a 76-year-old US company that makes electrical wires and cables. According to Forbes, the company is expected to benefit from rising demand for power infrastructure as more AI data centers are built across the United States. Southwire is fully owned by the Richards family, whose fortune is now estimated at $13.1 billion. The company also reported a record $9.7 billion in revenue in 2025, helped by strong demand for electrical equipment, higher copper prices and increased spending on AI infrastructure.
Data centers
increase demand for power equipment
As reported by Forbes, Southwire makes about half of the wire and cable used to distribute electricity in the United States. Its products are also used in about half of American homes. The report says AI data centers are becoming an important growth driver for the company. According to the US Federal Reserve Board, investment in AI data centers quadrupled between 2021 and 2025. Around 1,500 new AI data centers are also being developed across the country. These facilities use powerful AI chips that need two to four times more electricity than traditional computer chips. That increases demand for electrical wires, cables and power systems.Southwire was founded in 1950 by Roy Richards and is still 100% owned by the Richards family, according to Forbes. The company has more than 9,000 employees and operates in over 40 US cities, along with several international locations.Forbes said Southwire’s revenue has grown by more than 50% since 2021, helped by rising copper prices, strong infrastructure spending and growing demand from AI data centers. The company is also known for its 12 for Life programme in Georgia, which combines classroom learning with manufacturing jobs to help improve high school graduation rates.Get the latest technology news and updates.
