On Saturday, August 22 from 11 AM to 3 PM, the Central District Community Preservation & Development Authority (CDCPDA) is co-hosting the free, family-friendly expo alongside Fresh Start Professional Services, Food Lifeline, and the IF Project. Two of those partners: Fresh Start Professional Services and the IF Project, are tenants inside the McKinney Center for Community & Economic Development, making this event a living example of the building’s mission in action: organizations rooted in the Central District, working together, under one roof, for the community they serve.
The expo will offer free produce and nutrition demonstrations, women’s health workshops, massages/facials (available on a first-come, first-served basis), health reto the public
For the CDCPDA, this event is part of a deliberate effort to restore the McKinney Center for Community & Economic Development as a true community hub. Originally built during the Civil Rights era as the Seattle Opportunities Industrialization Center (SOIC) to create economic pathways for Black Seattle residents, the building is once again becoming a place where the Central District community gathers, receives services, and sees itself reflected. Events like Community at Heart are not incidental to that mission; they are the mission.
