Boston City Councilor Henry Santana issued a statement Tuesday saying he has been hospitalized with “persistent and unresolved health issues” that will prevent him from attending Wednesday’s council meeting
Santana, 30, an at-large councilor, said he has been dealing with the medical issues throughout the summer and went to see a doctor last Thursday, which led to an extended hospital stay

“Because I remain hospitalized while I undergo additional testing and evaluation, I will unfortunately be unable to attend Wednesday’s Boston City Council meeting,” he said. “I want Boston residents to know that while this has been an unexpected and difficult moment for me personally, I am receiving exceptional care from the team at the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.”
Santana went on to say that he is “deeply grateful” for the outpouring of support and well wishes he has received from friends, colleagues and residents
“As someone who has always believed in the power of community, I can say that those messages have meant more to me than I can fully express during this time,” he said
Santana said his focus right now is on following his doctors’ guidance, completing the necessary testing and making a full recovery. He said he looks forward to returning to City Hall and the communities he represents “as soon as I am able.”
In his absence, he said his staff continues to manage the daily operations of his council office, assisting residents and ensuring that initiatives remain on track
