Sharks’ Orlov, Askarov, Chernyshov Will Have to Wait At Least One More Year for International Competition

On Thursday, the International Ice Hockey Federation announced that Russia’s ban from competition will not be lifted in 2027. As a result, San Jose Sharks defenseman Dmitri Orlov’s return to international competition will be delayed. Igor Chernyshov and Yaroslav Askarov would be long-shots to make a Russian National Team at this stage, but their ambitions will have to wait as well
In their announcement, the IIHF ruled that the Russian National Team will not be allowed to participate in four tournaments: the 2027 Men’s World Championship, the 2027 World Junior Championship, and both the Men’s and Women’s 2027 U18 World Championship. They did also state that no decision has been made regarding the 2027 Women’s World Championship though, as that will be reviewed in November
The IIHF Council cited “safety, security, operational feasibility and sport integrity” in their statement.
Orlov last represented his country at the 2021 World Championship, Russia’s last senior competition before the ban was put in place in early 2022. Askarov previously represented Russia at the World Junior Championship, and Chernyshov represented his country at the U18 level.
