We trust that everyone had a great Independence Day, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the USA! I am thankful to live in a nation where we still have the freedom we have, unlike so many others who are less fortunate. We owe this freedom to the many, many soldiers who have fought for this great country. “All gave some…some gave all.”
There was no rain to drown out the celebrations and festivities, but there was plenty of heat to go around! I guess one should expect no less for July. It will make us appreciate the cooler temps when they arrive!
We had a good week at the Nutrition Center. There is always something to do when making plans for our seniors. Whether it be planning meals, activities, completing reports for what has been done, etc.; I guess you would call that the “behind-the-scenes work.” All of it has not stayed behind the scenes lately, but spread all over the front desk, doing what I can, as I work the desk. Hannah is busy doing this, and much more, in the office. It is a blessing to have an Administrator that we work so well with. We each have our own duties, but we work together, as a team, very well.
Wednesday we had a good number of people enjoying the traditional meal of Fried or Baked Chicken with mashed potatoes/gravy, green beans, biscuit, salad bar, and dessert. We will continue this meal on Wednesdays as long as it remains what the patrons are desiring, and don’t get burnt out. Friday was also a good day with folks enjoying the fish and fixins’. We had cake by Linda again, and it was scrumptious! Of course, we had Free Bingo beginning at noon. It was the day for Crown Hospice to be with us, but they were closed for the holiday, so the volunteers and friends supplied the prizes, and I called the games. I have called for 3 weeks in a row, as Cindy Boyer has been under the weather. Cindy, I am glad you are feeling some better, and not just for Bingo!
This Friday, July 10, we will have the Vet-to-Vet Cafe’ with Karen Romine from Legacy Hospice. She will be set up by 10:30 a.m. and ready to visit with you all. She will enjoy hearing any story you would like to share with her. Stop by her table and register for a door prize. She always has a nice patriotic-themed gift to be drawn for
Friday, July 17, we will be honoring Mr. Troy Hale for our Veterans Honor Wall. Mr. Hale is the oldest known WWII Veteran living in Wayne County. We have his Veterans plaque ready to be unveiled. We were planning to honor him earlier but he had a fall and has been recuperating. We will do the unveiling at 1:00 p.m. So, at the end of Bingo, we will do his honoring. Come out to show your appreciation and support for this deserving Veteran!
Also, on July 17 is JULY JAM!!! Mark your calendar NOW so you don’t miss it! We are so excited for this event! It is the first, and hopefully the first of many! We will begin at 5:30 p.m. and go until 8:30ish. We will have LIVE MUSIC by the CADE WHITE BAND, and other jammers. The Nutrition Center will have available BBQ plates, BBQ Nachos, desserts, and drinks. There will be vendors around the perimeter of the lot for shopping. They will have craft items and maybe whole baked goods. Individual serving baked goods or drinks will not be allowed sold by the vendors, as this is a large part of the Nutrition Center’s fundraiser. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy the evening! We will not be taking our dining chairs onto the parking lot. No coolers or alcoholic drinks on the premises, please. We look forward to seeing you all! Help us spread the word and let’s make this a great event! JULY JAM on JULY 17!!
The monthly Board Meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 21, at 1:00 p.m. We will be able to discuss JULY JAM; how we did, what we could have done better, etc. We will have our standard reports and updates, to keep everyone up to speed on the Center. We will discuss the next event, which is TRIVIA NIGHT, on August 1, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. We will finalize plans for that evening. Adam, Cindy Davis-Wood’s son, will be hosting the games for us again, for the third time. Be sure to get your teams ready for this event. Teams may be six players or less. Name your team and be ready to compete! The cost is just $10 per player for the evening. We will have concession foods and drinks available, as always. Mark your calendar for this fun evening!
July 24 will be our JULY BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION! We will have “Cakes by Linda” and ice cream to celebrate those who have had a birthday during the month
Monday, July 27, the SENIOR COMMODITY BOXES will be delivered to the Nutrition Center and available for pickup. We ask that you collect your box as soon as is convenient, to help us keep the boxes cleared out. If you would like to sign up for these services, you may receive an application at the front desk of the Center. The income guidelines increased this year. So, if you are interested, and have the need for the service, talk to the person at the desk. We partner with Southeast Missouri Food Bank, who supplies the boxes for our seniors. You must be 60 years of age+ to qualify for the boxes. We are proud to partner with SEMO Food Bank to be a distribution center for this service. The boxes are delivered once a month, on the fourth Monday.
The BLESSING BOX is available on the parking lot of the Nutrition Center. If you have a need, you may access it 24/7. Anyone is welcome to receive food from the box. We only ask that you take what you need and leave what you can. This way, we can serve multiple families.
