Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD)fell 8.5% before Wednesday’s openingbell even after issuing third-quarter revenue guidance above Wall Street estimates, as investors demanded a bigger upside surprise following the stock’s recent AI-driven rally. The selloff exposed a widening gap between AMD’s strong operating trajectory and the extraordinary growth already embedded in its valuation

AMD designs central processing units and graphics processors used in PCs, gaming systems, data centers and artificial-<a href="https://todaytrendnews7.com/artificial-intelligence-in-drug-discovery-what-it-is-where-we-stand-and-the-path-forward/” title=”Artificial intelligence in drug discovery — what it is, where we stand and the path forward”>intelligence infrastructure. Its investment case increasingly depends on server CPUs and Instinct AI accelerators taking share from larger rivals
AMD expects third-quarter revenue of $12.7 billion to $13.3 billion. The $13 billion midpoint is comfortably above the $12.51 billion consensus estimate, while adjusted gross margin is expected to reach 56%
Yet the guidance was not strong enough for investors who had raised expectations following AMD’s recent Advancing AI event. Wedbush analyst Matt Bryson said the quarter was solid but not enough to meet/beat heightened buyside expectations. He maintained an Outperform rating and $600 price target, arguing that AMD’s longer-term commentary still supports its AI growth thesis
GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu was even more bullish, raising his target to $700 from $640. Pu attributed the decline to high expectations and highlighted AMD’s server CPU opportunity, pricing strength and potential MI450 and MI500 accelerator share gains
Citi retained a Buy rating and $575 target, describing the pullback as an opportunity. Susquehanna, Bernstein and Raymond James also increased their targets to $550, $650 and $565, respectively
The central concern is valuation. Seeking Alpha analyst Julia Ostian estimated AMD’s long-term earnings growth expectations imply the company may need growth approaching 100% during coming quarters to justify current multiples
Investor Takeaway On AMD Stock
Investors should watch whether data-center growth accelerates enough to offset slower expansion elsewhere and whether AMD maintains its projected 56% gross margin while ramping new AI products
MI450 and MI500 customer adoption, server CPU market-share gains and future revenue guidance will determine whether analysts’ higher targets are credible. Stronger accelerator sales could validate the premium valuation, while slower deployments or margin pressure would reinforce the market’s warning that good results are no longer enough
