The 154th Open Championship just got wilder
Lucas Herbert made history in Round 2, as did Sam Burns, both carding 62s to tie for the lowest rounds ever in a major championship
But it’s what happened in the our after Bryson DeChambeau that is the headline

DeChambeau birdied the 18th to get to 7-under for the tournament. But then, before signing his scorecard, he was informed of a potential rules violation. It happened at No. 5, hours earlier, when DeChambeau drove his ball into the grass. Officials contend that while walking through the tall grass, DeChambeau improved his lie
In a wild scene, DeChambeau and rules officials hopped in a golf cart and made their way back out to No. 5, where a 10-minute back and forth ensued. Ultimately, DeChambeau lost and will be docked 2 shots, going from second place at 7-under to T5 at -5
Herbert, a 30-year-old Australian, went out with a 6-under 28, tying the lowest-ever nine-hole score in the history of The Open Championship. He had a shot at the first-ever 61, but missed a 5-footer for par at 18. Still, it’s a 62, and at 8-under, he has the 36-hold lead
Unbelievably, he wasn’t the only one to shoot 62. Burns did too, and needed a chip-in at 18 to do it. He’s at -5, three back of the lead

But as those two settled into the clubhouse, DeChambeau took to the course and made sure he won’t miss a fourth straight cut at a major this year. DeChambeau followed up an opening round 67 with a 4-under 66, getting him to -7 for the tournament … until the penalty
He and Herbert would have been in the final pairing Saturday. Now it will be Herbert and Jackson Suber
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler isn’t far behind, grinding his way to a 2-under 68. He’s at 4-under

It’s been more than an hour, but DeChambeau is finally out of the scoring tent … without talking. He is going to “hit some golf balls.” That’s all he said
There is no official word, but the official Open scoreboard has recorded a 7 at No. 5 for Bryson, dropping him two strokes. He’s now listed at -5
Bryson DeChambeau is back now, and was heard calling the R&A “crooks” as he walked into the scoring tent

After about a 10-minute animated meeting, rules officials are carting Bryson back to the clubhouse. And now we wait
If video of the meeting at No. 5 is any indication, Bryson DeChambeau is about to lose two strokes or maybe even be DQ’ed if he signed his card. This is a major development

Well, now Bryson DeChambeau may be hit with a penalty for stepping on grass earlier in his round at the 5th hole. It’d be a two-shot penalty, which would drop him to 5-under instead
Bryson and rules officials are now on their way back out to No. 5, the scene of the “crime.”
Despite a couple bogeys at 15 and 16, Si Woo Kim has got it to -5 with a birdie at 17. The leaderboard is jam-packed
Both had birdie opportunities at 18, both barely missed. They both shot 67s, both are at -4, and very well could be paired again tomorrow

Spieth wasn’t going to make the cut, but a 9 at 17 cemented his flight home
What a disappointment for Spieth, who won the last time the tournament was at Royal Birkdale
An 8-footer for par at 18 goes down for Scheffler, who heads to the weekend at -4, four back
Bryson DeChambeau will be in the final group on Saturday, firing a 4-under 66 on Friday, thanks to a birdie at 18. He’s at -7, just one back. Wow

It’s a third in four holes — and could have been four straight had he not missed a short one at 16 — and now Fleetwood is to -4
It’s a warning for Rahm, not a penalty, so he dodges a golf club there. The R&A will have some explaining to do as to what warrants a warning vs. a penalty
A stellar up-and-down for Bryson at 17 leads to a birdie, and now he’s got it to -6, T2, two back
Where are you, Nick?

Rahm follows up the bogey with a birdie at 16 to get back to -3. Still waiting to hear if the R&A is going to slap him where it hurts — the scoreboard — or just on the wrist
After the club throw, Rahm went on to bogey No. 15, moving him to -2. The R&A official on the broadcast was pretty non-comital
Not sure where they draw the line between what necessitates a warning vs. a two-stroke penalty, but that was a hefty throw from Rahm
It’s another birdie for Tommy Fleetwood, a lengthy one at 15, to get him to -3, with birdie holes still to come. The local lad is making a run

Well Jon Rahm was not happy with that one. Rahm, after his tee shot at the 15th, immediately threw his iron down into the ground hard. He was livid
That could end up costing him, too. And at 3-under, that would be massive…
Absolutely no notes
