TIGNALE, Italy — Wildfires are threatening some of Northern Italy’s best-known vacation landscapes at the height of the European summer travel season, with tourists evacuated from accommodation overlooking Lake Garda while firefighters battle several other fires around Lake Como and the Lombardy Alps. Authorities canceled the preparations for evacuations at around 15.00h today
The most immediate tourism emergency was unfolding at Tignale, on the western shore of Lake Garda in the province of Brescia, where a major forest fire broke out near Olzano and spread through exceptionally dry woodland
Authorities ordered precautionary evacuations as flames approached homes and tourism accommodation. Reports from the area said around 200 residents and tourists were evacuated, including guests from a tourist residence and holiday homes. Such evacuations are now canceled
The evacuation came during one of the busiest periods of Italy’s summer tourism season, when Lake Garda — Italy’s largest lake and one of the country’s most important international holiday destinations — is crowded with European visitors

Canadair water bombers and helicopters repeatedly collected water from Lake Garda before flying over Tignale to attack the flames. According to the Giornale di Brescia, aircraft began operations at approximately 6:40 a.m., while about 50 wildfire volunteers and multiple fire brigade teams remained deployed on the ground
The fire affected highly combustible resinous woodland already severely dried by prolonged heat
The emergency forced the evacuation of the La Forca residence and at least five holiday homes occupied by foreign tourists
Later Saturday, local reporting indicated evacuees had been allowed to return while firefighting and containment operations continued
For travelers, this is an important distinction: there is currently no indication that Lake Garda as a whole has been evacuated or closed to tourism. The emergency is localized, but it demonstrates how quickly wildfire conditions can affect individual communities and accommodation areas during the peak holiday season

Several active fires are simultaneously affecting Lombardy, including a major blaze on Monte Moregallo, directly overlooking the Lecco branch of Lake Como
As of Saturday morning, fires remained active around Valmadrera/Monte Moregallo, Premana and Gordona, creating an unusually demanding multi-front firefighting operation across the provinces of Lecco and Sondrio
The Moregallo fire is particularly relevant for tourism because the burning mountain rises immediately above one of Italy’s most internationally recognized lake destinations
ANSA reported that firefighters deployed a heavy Erickson S-64 helicopter to make repeated water drops. Fire brigade boats were also positioned on Lake Como to restrict navigation in the water-collection zone and protect boat traffic while aircraft collected water
Local reports estimate that approximately 200 hectares have been affected around Moregallo. The SP583 road remained closed because of the danger of debris falling onto the roadway, while firefighters continued battling multiple active fronts
At Gordona in the Valchiavenna area north of Lake Como, another fire has burned more than 20 hectares of woodland. Helicopters, Canadair aircraft and ground crews have been deployed, with extreme heat and forecast winds causing additional concern

On Monte Brione, the distinctive mountain between Riva del Garda and Torbole, firefighters battled a forest fire overnight after flames spread across approximately 500 square meters of woodland. Wind complicated firefighting operations, although crews succeeded in bringing the blaze under control at around 3 a.m
That fire was substantially smaller than the Tignale emergency, but its location underscores the vulnerability of heavily visited Alpine and lake destinations during the current dry period

Italy is experiencing another prolonged period of extreme summer heat. On August 7, 26 monitored Italian cities were under red heat alerts, while drought conditions were reported as particularly serious in Northern Italy. Water reserves in Lombardy were reported at roughly half normal levels, with the Po and other rivers and lakes at critically low levels
The combination of prolonged heat, dry vegetation and wind can allow relatively small fires to develop rapidly and complicate suppression efforts
Italy had already recorded an unusually active wildfire year before the peak summer fire season. Legambiente reported nearly 500 fires during the first months of 2026 before the main summer wildfire campaign began
What Travelers to Northern Italy Should Know
There is currently no evidence of a general shutdown of tourism in Northern Italy, Lake Garda or Lake Como
Hotels, airports, rail networks and most tourism infrastructure across the region continue operating. The principal risk for travelers is localized disruption near active fires, including temporary evacuations, road closures, smoke, hiking restrictions and interruptions to lake navigation where firefighting aircraft are collecting water
Travelers staying around Lake Garda, Lake Como, Valchiavenna and nearby Alpine areas should follow instructions from local authorities, accommodation providers, the Protezione Civile and Italy’s Vigili del Fuoco rather than relying on social-media images alone
The situation can change quickly when wind conditions shift
For Italy’s tourism industry, however, the timing could hardly be more sensitive. Early August is one of the country’s busiest vacation periods, and Lake Garda and Lake Como are among Northern Italy’s flagship international destinations
Saturday’s evacuations at Tignale therefore represent more than a forest-fire emergency. They are another warning that extreme heat, drought and wildfire risk are becoming an increasingly immediate operational issue for European tourism destinations
