Artificial Intelligence education is rapidly expanding across the United States, and demands experts in their field
There are currently 208 programs offering a bachelor’s degree in Artificial Intelligence. However, North Carolina Central University is the first North Carolina college to build a dedicated AI building, called the Institute for Artifical Intelligence and Emerging Research (IAIER)
On Monday, the college cut the ribbon on the first artifical intelligence institute established by a historically Black college or university (HBCU). The building is located at the corner of Fayetteville and Lawson Streets.
Last year the school added a module introducing AI to freshman in a mandatory university education class in the Fall. They will being offering a minor in AI through the NCCU Department of Mathematics and Physics beginning Fall 2026.
“Artifical intelligence is transforming nearly every industry,” said NCCU Chancellor Karrie G. Dixon. “We want to not only prepare students but help them shape AI.”
Inside features an AI Literacy Studio, Machine Learning and Data Science Studio, Robotics and Emerging Tech Lab, XR Innovation Sandbox, Ethics and Governance classrooms and Innovation Atrium.
The 5,000-square foot building cost $7.2 million, and was funded by a NCCU trust funds and federal Title III grants.
