A newlywed couple secretly slipped away from their wedding reception for fast food because they were “absolutely starving” after not eating all day due to nerves
They said they returned to the festivities about an hour later and most of their guests hadn’t even realized they left
“I’d recommend other couples doing something similar because there’s no rulebook,” the bride, Amy Wilkin said, adding, “It’s all about celebrating you and your partner, so there’s no right or wrong — just do what you feel is good for you”
A newlywed couple admitted they briefly ditched their wedding reception for a much-needed fast food run
Amy and Dan Wilkin, who tied the knot on June 4, said they skipped breakfast on their wedding day because they were too nervous to eat before saying “I do,”

“We were absolutely starving at that point,” said Amy, 29, noting that they were “desperate.” She added that she and Dan, 30, quietly slipped away from their reception in Newcastle, England, while guests were enjoying it
“[The guests] were having canapés, drinks and listening to our musician so we snuck off and went off to Greggs,” she said, referring to a popular U.K. bakery and fast food chain known for items like sausage rolls and other savory pastries
The couple later posed for photos outside the shop while sharing the snacks

The newlyweds also hopped aboard the city’s Metro system for additional wedding portraits before returning to the reception, where Amy said many guests hadn’t even realized they had been gone
“[The wedding guests] were surprised when we told them we went to Greggs and they were impressed with the photos,” she said. “These are my favorite photos of the day. We’ve got lots of really good memories, but I must admit the Greggs and Metro photos are the ones a lot of our friends and family talk about most.”

Amy said the detour also held sentimental meaning because Newcastle is where the couple’s relationship began after they met on Tinder in 2020
“Our love story happened in Newcastle City Centre, so we just wanted to do some really Northern and Newcastle-based things,” she explained. “We just so happened to walk past Greggs and we thought it’d be a really great opportunity for some photos. Newcastle is the birthplace of Greggs.”

Amy said she hopes sharing her story helps other couples feel empowered to make their wedding day their own — even if that means stepping away for an unconventional snack
“We’re not a traditional kind of couple and we don’t do things by halves,” she said. “Our whole wedding was alternative themed and we were listening to rock music.“
