New movies to stream
‘Michael’
One of the year’s most talked about films, “Michael,” the Michael Jackson biopic from director Antoine Fuqua, made its streaming debut on Starz earlier this week. The flick, which earned over a billion dollars at the box office, stars Jaafar Jackson as his famous uncle, following the King of Pop’s journey from his early years as part of the Jackson 5 through his “Bad” tour in the ’80s. Available on Starz
‘Don’t Say Good Luck’
Like her dad Adam Sandler, Sunny Sandler has become a bit of a fixture on Netflix in recent years, and is now starring in the new dramedy “Don’t Say Good Luck,” arriving Friday on the streaming service. In this coming-of-age tale, Sandler plays a girl named Sophie who lands the lead in her high school’s musical production, only to find a much more serious kind of drama waiting for her at home. The film also stars Melanie Lynskey, Max Greenfield, Bebe Neuwirth, and Steve Buscemi. Available on Netflix
New TV to stream
‘Lanterns’
Trading in “Friday Night Lights” for the emerald light of a Green Lantern ring, Kyle Chandler stars in DC’s latest superhero series, premiering Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO (also streaming on HBO Max). Chandler is Hal Jordan, a veteran of the intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps, who teams up with newbie ring-slinger John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) to look into a mysterious murder on Earth. Binge-worthy TV pick
‘Reacher’
Alan Ritchson is back as buff action hero Jack Reacher for season 4 of “Reacher,” now streaming on Prime Video. The latest installment is based on “Gone Tomorrow,” the 13th book in Lee Child’s popular Reacher series, with the first three episodes of the new season now available to binge watch (new episodes will drop weekly through Sept. 16). Available on Prime Video
Movie night pick
‘Normal’
In “Normal,” streaming Friday on HBO Max, Bob Odenkirk plays the interim sheriff of a fictional Minnesota town who discovers that its seemingly average citizens are harboring a violent secret. The action-packed crime flick, from director Ben Wheatley and screenwriter Derek Kolstad, also stars Henry Winkler and Lena Headey. Available on HBO Max
