Meta removed its new AI image generator Musa Image after receiving backlash and criticism citing privacy concerns. Here’s what we know.
On Friday, Meta announced its new AI image generator, which allowed people to generate artificial intelligence content by taking publicly posted Instagram photos, was no longer available
That feature, called Musa Image, was launched on Tuesday. It allowed users to pull “part or all of your published photos” to create new A.I. images, according to a company blog post

The tool sparked immediate backlash and criticism from privacy advocates. On Friday, the company updated its blog post to announce the tool will no longer be available
“Earlier this week, we announced that one way for people to generate images in Meta AI is by @-mentioning public Instagram accounts that they want to reference. Our intent was to provide a useful creative tool and to give people control over whether their public content could be referenced in this way. We’ve heard the feedback that this feature missed the mark, so it’s no longer available,” the company wrote
With the tool, users could tag a public Instagram account in the Meta AI app and direct the chatbot to create new AI photos based on photos from that person’s account
This prompted criticism and backlash from privacy advocates; one of them was Taylor Lorenz, a journalist and author who covers <a href="https://todaytrendnews7.com/university-of-chicago-cutting-use-of-ai-by-banning-technology-in-classrooms-for-first/” title=”University of Chicago cutting use of AI by banning technology in classrooms for first”>technology and who argued the tool allowed users to create a photo or video using another person’s likeness without their consent and without any sort of notification
“The fact that someone you don’t know could take your picture or your image and doctor an AI generated image of you is just really gross,” said J.B. Branch, director of AI policy at Public Citizen, a nonprofit consumer advocacy organization
