Tenn. (WMC) – A group of Memphians is working to restore a neglected local cemetery and the significant history buried there
The Hollywood Cemetery is located off Hernando Road in South Memphis. It’s the final resting place of legendary blues musicians Furry Lewis and Frank Stokes
In addition, many of the men who participated in the historic 1968 Memphis sanitation strike are buried there as well
Organizers said the cemetery has been overgrown and neglected for years
Hattie Danger and Diane Greene are leading the effort to restore it. They’re calling on all Memphians, not just those with loved ones buried there, to get involved
“So it’s important that we restore this cemetery to what it used to look like. I want people to be able to come out here and enjoy sitting out here. You know just the spirit of being out here in the presence of their loved ones is good and we don’t we don’t need to be sitting in a jungle,” Hattie Danger said
If you want to help, a three-day cleanup event is planned for October 10 through the 12
Organizers said every hand counts and the goal is to restore the cemetery to the way it should look and the way it deserves to look
