John P. Morgan, professor and associate department head of statistics in the College of Science at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors
The emeritus title may be conferred on retired faculty members who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university
A member of the Virginia Tech community for more than 26 years, Morgan taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics. He mentored four Ph.D. students, guiding them to successful and productive careers in academics and industry
He provided many years of distinguished contributions and leadership to the department, college, and university, serving on numerous committees, including six years as an associate dean in the College of Science and seven years as associate department head in the Department of Statistics
He founded and subsequently directed the Academy of Integrated Science at Virginia Tech, helming the development and integration of interdisciplinary, science-based degree programs, shepherding and enhancing research opportunities, and strengthening interdepartmental collaboration in learning, discovery, and engagement.
Morgan authored or co-authored more than 70 refereed journal articles, numerous other publications, and a forthcoming Springer textbook, “Linear Models Theory for Data Science.”
He served as principal or co-principal investigator on multiple National Science Foundation grants supporting research in experimental design. In addition to numerous novel contributions to design theory, his work has driven changes in commercial experimental design software. He is co-developer of the website designtheory.org. He was twice awarded visiting fellowships at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge and also held the post of visiting reseacher at Queen Mary Univerity of London.
Morgan received his bachelor’s degree from Roanoke College and his master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
