Hillcrest Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Lower Burrell (Shane Dunlap | TribLive)
A new food truck festival is coming to Lower Burrell this week
The first Hillcrest Flavor Fest will be hosted from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday outside Hillcrest Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center
Julia Sizemore, Hillcrest’s director of nursing and the event organizer, said the event will give residents a chance to enjoy the community
“It’s just a way to get everybody together,” she said
The event will also afford Hillcrest the ability to offer appreciation for its staff, Sizemore said, while showing the public what the facility is like in hopes of breaking negative stereotypes of nursing homes
Sizemore, who started her position last year alongside Alisha Fenner, the facility’s assistant director of nursing, hopes to make the festival a yearly tradition
Since joining Hillcrest, Sizemore said they’ve been working to make the facility a welcoming and encouraging place through supporting and appreciating staff more and advocating for residents
“It’s a family home-like environment that we’re trying to create,” she said
During the Flavor Fest event, facility tours will be offered and open interviews will be available to anyone interested in joining the staff
“We’ve been doing a lot of work building a great staff,” she said. “We have a great group of (certified nursing assistants) and nurses.”
She said Flavor Fest will give Hillcrest’s residents, especially those who aren’t able to participate in regular shopping outings, a chance to
commune with the neighborhood
“It gets them a little bit of socialization for those who don’t get out as much,” she said
Hillcrest is a skilled nursing facility where some people go for temporary therapy treatments, while others are long-term residents living there
The is no admission fee for the event, but participants must buy their own food from the trucks
Sizemore said the event will include local vendors, live music and other family-friendly activities, including a booth with temporary tattoos for kids
