Allergy warning sign unveiled after woman’s death

A playground sign warning people about food allergies has been unveiled in memory of a woman who died after unknowingly eating nuts
Jess North, 20, from Chichester, West Sussex, died in May 2021 after a fatal anaphylactic reaction
Her family have helped install a sign at Hotham Park in Bognor Regis
Her mother, Maxine North, said: “Through Jess’ legacy, we hope to inspire understanding and encourage simple acts of care that can help protect others from experiencing the heartbreak that our family has endured.”

Maxine North added: “We hope this sign will encourage children, parents and carers to be mindful of food allergies and to help create safer, more inclusive spaces where every child can enjoy the freedom of a happy, healthy, and a normal childhood as possible.”
The sign, fitted by food allergy charity Natasha’s Foundation, urges people to eat in picnic areas away from play equipment and to ensure that children’s hands are clean before they use play equipment
The sign was designed by school children invited to help by Jess North’s family
Natasha’s Foundation education director Jan Parnell said: “There is a lack of understanding about the seriousness of food allergy
“Projects like this will help to end the challenges that children with food allergies face so that they can be fully involved in all activities in and out of school.”
