As the MLB trade deadline approaches, the Minnesota Twins are an interesting team to watch. The Twins have had a lot of attention on them as potential major sellers, like they were a year ago

However, the Twins are in decent shape for a postseason push, sitting at 54-55, just 1.5 games back of the AL Wild Card. They might actually buy at the MLB trade deadline, which would be a plan that other clubs might not want to see the Twins conduct
According to former MLB GM Jim Bowden for The Athletic, the Twins’ plan with a pair of All-Stars at the deadline – starting pitcher Joe Ryan and outfielder Byron Buxton – has the duo expected to stay in Minnesota through the August 3 deadline
Twins trade deadline plan for Buxton, Ryan revealed
“For much of the season, it was rumored that the Twins would be open to trading stars Joe Ryan and Byron Buxton, but that isn’t happening,” Bowden writes. “In fact, the Twins are looking to add and are trying to improve their bullpen.”

With the Twins on the verge of a postseason spot, it shouldn’t be unexpected that they’re not expected to sell, and instead are expected to buy at the trade deadline
They could benefit from adding help to the bullpen this summer, and could also use another starting pitcher. But, it doesn’t look like they’re going to sell this summer. At least, when it comes to Buxton and Ryan
Minnesota is expected to retain Buxton and Ryan through the August 3 deadline, going against the trend from a year ago, when they were major sellers at the deadline

While it might be an unfortunate update for teams like the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, and Philadelphia Phillies, all of which could use Buxton and/or Ryan, it’s one that Twins fans should be happy to hear
Ryan is a two-time All-Star who is under club control through the 2027 season. Buxton is on the injured list right now, but he has 3.2 bWAR this season in his third All-Star year with 25 homers and an .864 OPS. He is also under control through 2028
Bowden believes there is no chance the Twins trade Buxton or Ryan, and instead that their deadline plan will be about upgrading the bullpen to contend for the 2026 postseason
