Across the commonwealth, elevated heat will last through at least Sunday, July 19. While not as high as the temperatures we saw at the beginning of the month, the next few days will bring heat indices in excess of 100 degrees in most locations, along with the potential for thunderstorms this weekend. Overnight cooling will be minimal
Additionally, smoke from Canada’s current wildfires will permeate throughout the commonwealth, degrading air quality. Please monitor current conditions and local forecasts with an eye toward safety for outdoor work and events. It is important to take care of yourself and others
These conditions present risk of heat-related illnesses for people and animals outdoors or in non-air-conditioned spaces. Plan ahead to stay hydrated and limit outdoor exertion where possible. Seek shade and know the signs of heat stress.Â
Elevated heat can be especially hard on children and the elderly. Never leave anyone in a closed vehicle even for brief periods of time. Consider the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions. Adjusting to temperature changes may be hard for them; so be alert to their needs. Check on vulnerable family, friends, and neighbors and others who are at risk of heat-related illnesses
With continued high temperatures expected, supervisors and employees are encouraged to remain mindful of heat conditions when planning and performing outdoor activities.
