La. (KALB) -As families prepare for the coming months, doctors say now is a good time to schedule preventive care appointments
Routine checkups can include physical exams, vaccine updates and screenings that help identify potential health problems early
Dr. Joanna Holton of CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic said annual wellness exams can address a range of preventive care needs
“Once a year, a good checkup is to get the cholesterol checked, perhaps a mammogram scheduled, talk about colonoscopies if you’re in the right age group for that, talk about adult vaccines like flu shots, pneumonia shots, shingles vaccinations — so there’s a host of things that we can cover at a wellness exam,” Holton said
For children, checkups can also confirm they are ready for school and sports
Holton said pneumonia and shingles vaccines are available through pharmacies and physician offices and can be addressed during a wellness visit
“If you are a candidate for a pneumonia shot, we recommend to get that updated. The shingles vaccination is year-round, but we keep that, and it’s a good time at your wellness visit to even consider doing that too,” Holton said
