Breaking Down the Readiness Score in Wearable Fitness Devices

That number has a name: the readiness score. It’s built into most major wearables and has become one of the most trusted and most misunderstood features on the market. Here’s what actually goes into it, and what the research says it can and can’t tell you
What Is The Readiness Score?
The readiness or recovery score is a daily composite number, or color-coded zone, that wearable brands generate to estimate how prepared your body is for physical exertion. WHOOP calls it a recovery score, Oura calls it readiness, and Garmin splits it across training readiness and body battery. The underlying idea is the same across brands: pull together several biometric signals collected overnight and in recent days, then compress them into one easy-to-read number
Wearable use has grown enough that this score reaches many people.One 2025 survey found that more than a third of U.S. adults now use a wearable device to track their health or activity, and a large majority say they’d be willing to share that data with a doctor or physical therapist if asked

How The Readiness Score Is Calculated
Sports medicine has long framed injury risk as a mismatch between the demands placed on the body and its ability to handle them. A sudden jump in activity relative to what someone is used to raises the odds of injury, while a gradual increase gives tissue time to adapt.
Readiness scores are essentially an attempt to put a number on that balance using whatever data a wearable can collect. Three inputs make up nearly every version of the score: heart rate variability, sleep and workload
HRV measures the variation in time between individual heartbeats, rather than a straightforward heart rate. In general, a higher HRV at rest reflects a nervous system that’s relaxed and well-recovered, while a lower HRV can signal physical or mental stress. Wearables track changes in a person’s HRV over time relative to their own baseline, since normal HRV varies enormously from person to person based on many factors
