Baltimore DJ addresses food insecurity with weekly grocery giveaways

BALTIMORE —
A Baltimore DJ is tackling food insecurity by giving away free groceries every Tuesday morning outside Western High School
Sheron Muse, a resident, said the initiative has been a significant help

“(It’s) very helpful. I’m telling you it’s very helpful. I was just saying I needed some potatoes, and they (are priced) so high. So, stuff is so high now, so these places like this is a really big help; they really are, and I’m blessed to come up here and get this stuff, and it be good stuff,” Muse told WBAL-TV 11 News
Cars began lining up as early as 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, with people waiting to fill their bags with items that included meat, eggs, bread, chips, cheese, and even plants
Porsche Stubblefield, also known as DJ Nu Kicks, said the idea came to her after a conversation with a therapist about her desire to make a difference in the community
“I think it stopped her in her tracks, and she was like, ‘Well, what’s one thing that like pains you in this city,’ and I was like, the food insecurity,” Stubblefield told WBAL-TV 11 News
The opportunity arose when her father-in-law mentioned he could get free food on Tuesdays. Stubblefield asked if she could help and soon partnered with a local grocery store that allows her to collect items they no longer need
“A local grocery store, they allow us to come in on Tuesdays and get what they really don’t want, and it’s a lot of good stuff. So, now I just come here every Tuesday and give it away instead of taking it home,” Stubblefield told WBAL-TV 11 News
For the past month and a half, Stubblefield has been running the giveaway, and some community members, like Muse, have become regulars
“This is a really big help; they really are, and I’m blessed to come up here and get this stuff.”
“I drove past here one day and I saw them. So, this my second time here,” Muse told WBAL-TV 11 News
In addition to groceries, the initiative has provided toiletries, journals, and other items. Some community members have even donated money, which Stubblefield uses to purchase extra essentials like eggs, bread, and milk
“We know this is probably gonna take off, so we’re also going to be looking for more local reow this and make this bigger and continue for years and years and years,” Stubblefield told WBAL-TV 11 News

Stubblefield’s wife, Jasmine Everett, also known as Jazz, is by her side every week, rain or shine. Together, they are committed to making a lasting impact
“I just want to be more than just about making people dance, but also impacting people and helping them day-to-day, so it’s really beautiful, and I love it,” Stubblefield told WBAL-TV 11 News
Stubblefield encourages those who want to help or donate to message her on Instagram @DJNuKicks. She also provides receipts for any funds used to purchase items for the giveaway
“I love this city, and I really pray y’all pull up and keep continuing to show up for me, and I’ll continue to show up for y’all,” she said
