The United States Air Force has reaffirmed that the B-21 strategic stealth bomber remains on schedule and will be entering service sometime during 2027. Separately, the Air Force is also delaying the retirement of its B-1B Lancers to around 2037, suggesting it may take time for the B-21 to mature and be available in significant numbers
US Air Force confirms B-21 Raider delivery in 2027’s 2027 service timeline
US Air Force General Dale White, the director of Critical Major Weapon Systems at the Pentagon, gave an update on the status of the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider at the Life Cycle Industry Days at the Dayton, Ohio, Convention Center
During the event, he delivered a speech on the speed of acquisition, saying, “the B-21 Raiders will be on the ramp at Ellsworth Air Force Base in 2027.” He stated that the Raider has been hitting flight milestones, reaffirming its 2027 service date “without hesitation.”
He highlighted that the B-21 programme has been bolstered by an additional $4.7 billion in fiscal year 2026 funding and that the Air Force has boosted its B-21 industrial capacity by 25%
Some secondary outlets have said the B-21 and F-47 programmes are ahead of schedule, although it would appear more accurate to say they appear on schedule. The B-21 also appears mostly on budget as well
From first flight to frontline service in just four years
That said, there is evidence of internal acceleration (e.g., a planned 180-day test campaign completed in 73 days)
AGN has previously reported how the Air Force has paired an operational test pilot with a developmental test pilot in the same B-21 cockpit. It represents the fastest integration of joint developmental and operational testing in a major acquisition programme
The Air Force is compressing the flying prototype and testing stages to four years, with the Raider having had its first flight in 2023. For reference, the B-2 Spirit first flew in 1989 and entered service in 1997, a lapse of around eight years, although the collapse of the USSR removed the programme’s urgency
Speaking of the F-47, the Air Force stated the programme is characterized by “extreme teaming” with industry partners. White noted that the F-47 has entered its engineering and manufacturing development phase with unprecedented maturity and that “The F-47 will fly in this administration.”

Could the US Air Force buy more B-21 Raiders?
The total budget request for the B-21 for Fiscal Year 2027 appears to be around $6.1 billion, and this figure seems mostly consistent across the requests and the House and Senate drafts
The amount is roughly split, with $2.9 billion allocated to RDT&E and around $3.2 billion in procurement included for advance items. This would be less than Fiscal 2025 funding, with the one-off $4.5 billion in supplemental funding to increase production and keep the programme on track
The now-passed House NDAA includes a section about the need to increase the program of record for the Raider. The report says the committee is “concerned” that the unchanged program of record for 100 Raiders may be “insufficient to meet the requirements of the National Defense Strategy.”
It notes that this “remains unchanged since it was established in 2015, despite significant changes in the security environment.”
The House NDAA then directs the Secretary of Defense to submit a report by December 2026 that assesses how many B-21s are needed and “to the extent that there are additional B-21s required.”
