LEWISTON (WGME) — A new center in Lewiston is expanding education, nutrition and technology support for older adults and adults with disabilities across Maine

“It is really their space, their center, and we want them to come here and embrace it and really use it,” Sawyer-Manter said
The new space off Mollison Way brings together education, technology, nutrition, privacy and community support for older adults and adults with disabilities
Since 1972, SeniorsPlus has worked to improve the lives of older adults and adults with disabilities. The organization provides statewide services with an emphasis on Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties for core services such as nutrition and information and assistance, aimed at supporting independent living, healthy aging and fighting isolation
“The opening of the Encompass Center represents more than a new building, it represents our commitment to meeting the evolving needs of older adults and adults with disabilities in our community,” Sawyer-Manter said. “From expanded meal production to confidential telehealth spaces and technology access, this center allows us to serve our neighbors with greater dignity, connection and opportunity. We’re deeply grateful to our funders, donors and community partners who made this vision a reality.”

Dustin Warg, chair of the SeniorsPlus board, says technology and access will be a major focus
“The connectivity is going to be the big thing. We’re going to allow telehealth and other programs where we help with connectivity and helping seniors age in place and live well and we get to offer that now with all of the additional tech that we’ve added,” Warg said
A major part of the project is expanded space for the Meals on Wheels program. SeniorsPlus says it now has the capacity to prepare and store more than 175,000 meals for the year, benefiting 1,000 older adults and adults with disabilities in Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin Counties annually
Other features of the new facility include a pet food pantry to support Meals on Wheels clients with pets, a social dining area with kitchen access adjoining the education center, adult learning classes and activities such as book clubs, support groups, health promotion and exercise classes, and an expanded education center with two privacy pod rooms for telehealth, behavioral health, familial and legal consultations
