Chargers make fourth-down stop in red zone
The Los Angeles Chargers have built one of the game’s best defenses, and the players under the first-string are making a statement, too
Up 10-7 against the Texans, the Chargers looked to make a stop with Houston charging downfield, and they found a perfect opportunity when Houston chose to go for a fourth-and-1 instead of a field goal
TeRah Edwards came up clutch with the stop of Texans quarterback Graham Mertz, and possession reverts back to Los Angeles
Washington breaks off 53-yard run
Raiders rookie Mike Washington Jr.flashed his physicality and explosiveness on a 53-yard scamper to flip the field. But the real stars of the play were left tackle Charles Grant and receiver Jack Bech, who set the edge for Washington to break free

Love impresses early on with elusiveness
Jeremiyah Love’s ability to make defenders miss has been on display during Arizona’s first two scoring drives. He has spun away from one defender, juked another. He has 26 yards on seven carries
Richardson gets on track with TD rush
Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr.struggled throughout most of the first half against New England, throwing an interception and losing a fumble — but he ends the half with his best drive of the day
Richardson made an impact in the passing and rushing attacks, completing three straight passes over 10 yards and following it up with 7- and 1-yard rushes to find the end zone
The Patriots still hold a 10-7 lead just before halftime

Arizona takes lead against Las Vegas
The Las Vegas secondary is having a difficult time handling the Cardinals’ quarterbacks:
- Jacoby Brissett: 5-for-5, 44 yards, TD
- Gardner Minshew II: 5-for-5, 37 yards, TD
Just wait until Kedon Slovis takes the field
The Raiders rookie corner tandem of Hezekiah Masses and Jermod McCoy struggled in their first NFL game action
Masses gave up a third down conversion on a curl to Jordan Brooks, and McCoy was beat on a goalline fade to Simi Fehokofor a 10-yard touchdown
Both have had strong camps, leaving many to believe that they could compete for the second corner spot alongside Eric Stokes. But rookie mistakes reared early for both, going up against an unfamiliar opponent
Cards rookie Love eludes defenders with spin
Prepare your eyes for one of the wildest spin moves you’ve seen in a preseason game
The Cardinals entrusted rookie running backJeremiyah Love with a third-down carry, and he put on a show. Love burst past the yard-to-gain, then hit a whirlwind of a 360 to lose a Raider defender
That should add to the excitement for Love’s impending rookie year

DeVito connects with Williams for corner TD
Tommy DeVito to Kyle Williams, corner pocket!
The Patriots extended their lead to 10-0 on a red-zone pass from DeVito to Williams. The ball looked to be a bit behind Williams, but the young receiver adjusted and caught it along the sideline

Penalties stifle Lions’ offense
Halftime: Bengals 10, Lions 6
Some nice flashes for the Lions offensively, though their best drives were negated by penalties. RT Blake Miller looks the part, having no trouble in pass protection and moving defenders in the run game. RB Jacob Saylors (eight rushes, 55 yards) is having a nice night. A tough night for Isaac TeSlaa (drop leading to a pick) and Miles Frazier (three penalties)
Defensively, Ahmed Hassanein (sack), Skyler Gill-Howard (pressure) and Nick Whiteside (PBU) have made plays tonight. We’ll see if Josh Dobbs and the offense can rally in the second half
Assessing Mendoza’s first drive
The Raiders have been championing Fernando Mendoza’s resiliency through training camp. He showed that to start his first professional drive, overcoming a tipped pass at the line to convert on third down with an out route to Jack Bech
But he couldn’t conquer a Charles Grant holding penalty later on. Mendoza threw an ill-fated pass to Mike Washington that got him blown up by Denzel Burke for an incompletion on second down. And the Raiders conceded on third-and-18, opting for a draw to Dylan Laube
The rookie’s first possession as a Raider definitely had a highlight, but was less clean than Kirk Cousins before him
Lions bag two FG’s at half’s end
What a strange final minute of the first half of Lions-Bengals. This wild weather game has already featured fumbles on back-to-back plays, but the last minute of the first half is even stranger
Lions kicker Jake Bates knocks through a 41-yard field goal to get the Lions on the board with 34 seconds remaining. A 48-yard kick return by Cincinnati gets the Bengals into Lions territory, only for the Bengals to turn the ball over on downs and take 27 seconds off the clock
An intentional grounding penalty on that failed fourth-down conversion and a 9-yard run by Jacob Saylors positions Bates for a 52-yarder. Bengals still lead 10-6 at halftime

49ers set to play Rourke, Martinez under center
Neither Brock Purdy nor Mac Jones is suiting up at quarterback for the 49ers. Kurtis Rourke, a seventh-round pick a year ago who was recovering from knee surgery, will make his debut for the team as he competes with Adrian Martinez for a practice-squad spot
That is, unless he plays well enough this preseason to make the 49ers consider him a future No. 2 when Jones leaves after the season to pursue a starting job
Colts safety Hunter Wohler is being evaluated for a concussion. Wohler, a 2025 seventh-round pick, missed his entire rookie season due to a Lisfranc injury
The only two 49ers quarterbacks in uniform are Adrian Martinez and Kurtis Rourke, who are battling for the No. 3 role this season
Brock Purdy and Mac Jones don’t appear to be playing
TheBengals have a battle for their return job and Ke’Shawn Williams lands the first blow. He ripped off a 48-yard kickoff return in the final seconds of the first half
Williams brought juice to the return game when he was signed midway through last year and took over for the injured Charlie Jones. Jones is fighting for his job still along with rookie Dohnte Meyers, who will get his opportunities in the second half
Can Wilson build off 2025?
An Arizona player I’ve been interested to see this season is Michael Wilson
Last year, he blossomed once Jacoby Brissett replaced an injured Kyler Murray in the lineup. Wilson finished his third season with 78 catches for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns. The difficult part to determine was how much of his production was the result of a one-dimensional Arizona offense
The Cardinals were among the NFL’s worst rushing teams all season. So far this camp — and in this preseason game against the Raiders — Wilson has shown he has staying power. He looks good
Smack punctuates half with 58-yarder
On the final play of the first half, Packersrookie kicker Trey Smack made his 58-yard field-goal attempt count
Smack hit from well over 50 in the first quarter, only to have it called off for a Pittsburgh penalty. This one will stick and ends the half on a positive note after Pittsburgh’s prolonged touchdown drive
Smack has made all three of his field-goal chances, including two from beyond 55 yards out
Mendoza moves the chains

Richardson commits second turnover
Colts QB Anthony Richardson Sr. just lost a fumble on a scramble, his second turnover of Indy’s preseason opener against the Patriots
The 2023 No. 4 pick, who still hasn’t rescinded his trade request, is not having a great showing so far
