The Administration for Cyber Security said Tuesday that scammers are impersonating government agencies through malicious text messages and phone calls
The agency said it has received reports of scam groups using fake government identities to distribute malicious links and steal personal data and money, per CNA. It stressed that it will never send messages asking people to install software, call individuals about alleged data leaks, or request passwords or bank transfers
The agency said some phishing messages use names similar to agencies to appear credible, per Liberty Times. However, government agencies will never ask people to download programs or update files through text messages, it said, adding that official government websites end with “.gov.tw.”
The agency also warned against phone scams involving claims of personal information leaks or phone number misuse. It said officials will never request sensitive information or ask people to transfer money
The agency advised the public to follow three steps when facing suspicious messages or calls: do not click unknown links or download files, do not provide personal information or transfer money, and verify claims through official channels
