How many movies are too many to watch? That is the question I’ve been asking myself lately
When people ask what my hobbies are, I tell them that I love watching movies, but I also include a disclaimer that I probably watch too many
The sympathetic few might respond by saying something like, “There is no such thing as watching too many movies.” But that is up for debate
My obsession with movies all started during my time in college when I had nothing better to do than spend my time watching multiple movies
However, my love for movies can be traced back to my summer vacations as a kid. I can remember waking up early, before my parents, and asking them if I could put in a VHS tape
My mom had a collection of VHS tapes that I have since inherited. The titles of this collection range from classic Disney movies like “The Little Mermaid” to “Good Will Hunting”
The word VHS tape may be surprising, or, perhaps, totally unheard of for some readers. Especially coming from a freshly turned 21-year-old
One of my coworkers has even been quoted as saying, “I didn’t know people your age knew what a VHS tape is.”
Nonetheless, I do, and I have been growing the collection through poor financial choices such as thrifting and eBay purchases, so that I owned about 67 VHS tapes when I moved to Worthington about a month ago. That number has grown to 88 since visiting Sioux Falls
When I got the assignment to interview the owner of the Historic State Theatre in Jackson, I was more than happy to do so. When he told me the first movie he ever showed as a projectionist was “The Duchess and the Dirtwater Fox”, I naturally said I would add it to my watchlist
Of course, what I did not say is that there are already 590 films on that list. A number that is growing nearly every day
“How do I know the exact number?” you might ask. A valid question. My answer would be that I am one of the many individuals who has committed to an app called Letterboxd
Letterboxd’s primary function is the ability to log movies and leave reviews as well as to keep track of one’s watchlist. Some people use the app religiously, like me, while others download it and then forget about it
In my mind, Letterboxd is what separates the hardcore cinephiles and the casual movie-goers. Of course, when I say “movie-goer,” what I really mean is movie-viewer, because the actual act of going to the movie theater is becoming rare
Luckily for me, one of the reasons I decided to move to Worthington is because of its brand new movie theater, which is very nice, despite its lack of signage
When I took my mom there to see “Disclosure Day”, she said, “What is this place? It just looks like a huge, random building.”
I imagine this is a common reaction
Since moving to Worthington, I have been told to check out the more historical movie theaters in the area. This list currently includes the “haunted” Palace Theatre in Luverne, the Historic State Theatre in Jackson with its charming Art Deco style and the Verne Drive-In, also in Luverne
The drive-in theater particularly struck my fancy because despite my claim as a movie lover, I’ve never been to a drive-in. Hopefully living here will help me to check this off my bucket list
While living in Worthington, I have made an informal goal of watching a movie every day
I have been, more-or-less, following through with that goal, and some of the best movies I have seen since committing to the goal include: “Uptown Girls”, “Back to the Beach”, “Casablanca”, “Prozac Nation” and “Blow Out”
I would include a list of my least favorite movies I have seen since, but I believe that would be too controversial
The lesson of this column, because everything has to have a lesson, is this: As long as you have a movie in hand, no matter the medium, whether it be tape, streaming or IMAX, you have another world you can escape to for an hour or two
