McAllen-based pet prevention clinic TX Wellness Spay & Neuter is ending its trips to Laredo for services, the clinic announced Thursday afternoon
Although it did not cite a specific reason, TX Wellness Spay & Neuter said it reached the decision “after much consideration.”

“We are incredibly grateful for the support, kindness and trust you have shown us throughout the years,” the clinic said in a statement. “It has been an honor to serve and be a part of your pets’ lives. Thank you once again, Laredo, for allowing us to care for your pets and welcoming us into your community.”
The clinic had served Laredo pet owners since 2023 and was known for providing transportation to San Antonio for affordable spay and neuter services. It also offered traveling clinics that provided preventive care and low-cost vaccinations
Some pet owners took to social media to express sadness and frustration over the announcement
“This is very unfortunate because y’all were extremely helpful for our pets. I really hope this isn’t permanent,” Laredoan Mirza Karo wrote

Karo, who said he and his wife have relied on the clinic’s services for the past several years, told the Laredo Morning Times the decision leaves a gap for pet owners who depend on affordable veterinary care
“Pet care is very expensive and keeps rising just like everything else,” he said. “The pet wellness program helped budget people like me get affordable vaccinations and low-cost spaying and neutering. … I do hope someone similar can fill in the gaps.”
The departure comes as Laredo continues working to reduce pet overpopulation. According to the city of Laredo’s 2025 annual report, the municipal shelter’s live release rate increased from 54% in 2024 to 66% in 2025, though city officials have continued to identify stray animal overpopulation as one of Laredo’s most significant animal welfare challenges
The report also shows Laredo Animal Care Services performed a record 1,951 spay and neuter surgeries in 2025, more than double the 871 performed in 2023 and well above the 724 completed in 2024

Additionally, Laredo Animal Care Services completed more than 500 Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) surgeries in 2025 to help manage the city’s community cat population
Pet owners seeking affordable spay and neuter services still have local options, including Hwy. 83 Spay & Neuter, the Laredo Animal Protective Society’s Spay & Neuter Assistance Program, and Laredo Animal Care Services’ spay and neuter voucher program, which helps qualifying residents access low-cost sterilization services.
