La. (KNOE) — The West Monroe Community Center is launching a free wellness program for adults 55 and older, funded by a grant from the Living Well Foundation
The program begins Monday, August 3. Seniors can join conversations, share food, play classic games and participate in physical activities in the gym or on the outdoor track
A new AARP study found that adults 45 and older are lonelier than ever before. West Monroe Community Center Director Valisia Tisdale said the program was designed with that in mind
“We thought it would be a way to get seniors out and to get them moving, to combat loneliness and an opportunity for them to socialize and that would help them with their emotional and physical health,” Tisdale said
Chair One Instructor Zakiya Kyles said the program allows participants to move through dance fitness. She said the activity has produced results for those who have taken part
“People who have gained more confidence in being able to go do those things around their house, like they originally had done — from people being able to have more stamina to get up and cook because they like cooking,” Kyles said
Kyles said the program also holds personal meaning to her
“Everything to me, because what it is, is my opportunity to give back to the people who gave to me. So I have people in the class who knew me since I was a little girl,” Kyles said
Seniors can enroll now at the West Monroe Community Center
