There are few topics in modern parenting as fiercely debated as screen time for kids. Using a screen to calm a child is a common but guilt-inducing tool parents sometimes lean on in moments of desperation. But the impact of screens on cognitive development is different from child to child, a new study from The Ohio State University finds. For most children, screen use and cognitive development shape each other over time. For a smaller group, the screen appears to be influencing their development, rather than the other way around — and those children’s parents were more likely to report symptoms of depression.
