La. (KALB) -St. Mary’s Residential Community and Services has opened a new wellness gym for residents with developmental disabilities, giving them a dedicated space to exercise and stay active
Leaders say the gym is designed to help residents build confidence, improve their health, and enjoy everyday activities. An administrator said residents had been anticipating the opening for nearly a year
“This is something that our residents have been looking forward to for almost a year now,” said Bo Vets, administrator at St. Mary’s Residential Community and Services. “They’re really excited. When the ladies were here setting up the gym about two weeks ago, one of the residents saw them coming in with the equipment and he bee-lined it over here and he was ready to test it out before they even had it set up and going.”
Vets said physical activity is especially important for people with developmental disabilities, citing specific health considerations that make regular exercise a priority
“Movement, health, it’s all very important for all of us, but it’s really more important for people with developmental disabilities,” Vets said. “The medications that they take can affect their health in different ways. The diagnoses that they have, obviously they might have low muscle tone and just run into health problems that you and I might not run into at an early age.”
The gym was made possible through donations and community support. Officials said the contributions reflect ongoing efforts to improve the lives of St. Mary’s residents
