Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s parliamentary email account was among those targeted in a cyberattack on the computer systems of Italy’s lower house of parliament, with several lawmakers and other institutions also affected, news agency Reuters reported Tuesday. The attack targeted the IT systems of the Chamber of Deputies in recent days, although it was not immediately clear whether Meloni’s account had been accessed. Parliamentary technicians contained the incident, while officials said they had activated protective measures, according to Italian news agency ANSA.“Sources at Palazzo Chigi, the prime minister’s office, told news agency ANSA that the affected account was not the one Meloni uses for government communications.”Officials at the Chamber of Deputies said the incident did not constitute a security emergency, adding that such attacks occur frequently.“All protective measures have been implemented,” ANSA quoted the sources as saying, adding that the response involved cooperation with Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency. The measures may have included temporarily disabling certain computer system functions, which officials described as standard practice. They also said pressure on IT systems appeared to have intensified in recent days, affecting other national, European and international institutions. The incident comes amid a broader rise in cyberattacks across Italy and Europe in recent years, with governments, infrastructure operators and companies increasingly targeted. Such attacks have disrupted services and increased concerns about potential data breaches and the security of sensitive information.
