Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed he is in “intense discussions” with Donald Trump and his administration in an effort to soften the blow of the U.S. president’s latest tariffs on the automotive sector.
Speaking after a summit of European leaders in Paris, the Prime Minister described the new tariffs as “very concerning” and stressed that avoiding a trade war remains a priority.
“We need to stay pragmatic and clear-eyed,” he said. “We are engaged in serious talks with the U.S. on various economic matters, including steps to mitigate the impact of these tariffs.”
Starmer emphasised that while the UK will keep “all options on the table,” the preference is for a negotiated solution rather than escalating tensions. “Rather than jumping into a trade war, it’s better to work pragmatically toward an agreement. That’s why we’re taking this approach,” he said.
“The national interest comes first,” he added. “The motor industry does not want a trade war—but it’s vital we maintain flexibility in our response. I’m working closely with partners to make progress on economic arrangements that will better serve our country.”
