China Rejects Trump’s ‘Groundless’ Claims of Ongoing Tariff Talks
China has dismissed as unfounded President Donald Trump’s assertions that trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing are underway, following his remarks suggesting progress toward a possible deal to ease tariffs on the world’s second-largest economy.
Speaking from the Oval Office on Wednesday night, Mr Trump told reporters he expected to make decisions on tariffs within the next two to three weeks, but said the outcome “depends on them,” referring to China. He also claimed the two sides were in daily communication over the issue.
In response, Chinese commerce ministry spokesman He Yadong refuted the claims, stating, “As the competent department for foreign economic and trade relations, I would like to emphasise that there are currently no economic and trade negotiations between China and the United States.”
He added that any suggestion of ongoing China-US trade talks is “groundless and has no factual basis.”
