Amid the early Southern Hemisphere spring last September, Lachlan Morton set out to pedal a massive loop of his home continent, riding all 14,200 kilometers around Australia in an attempt to set the new Around Australia Record. Naturally, he succeeded, establishing a blazing-fast new time of just 30 days, nine hours, and 59 minutes. That equates to a whopping 460 kilometers every single day for an entire month.
Lachlan’s brother Gus followed his journey, capturing his many early morning starts, lonely stretches down Outback straightaways, interactions with curious and befuddled locals, gas station feasts, and battles with the elements. The resulting film, The Great Southern Country, is available to watch in full now, and it offers an intimate look at the reality of attempting a feat that only a rider like Lachlan could pull off. It showcases the rugged beauty of seldom-seen corners of Australia and highlights how great challenges can unite people from all walks of life. Watch it below.
“You need to really pull yourself into it to do it justice. It’s supposed to be hard and uncomfortable.”
During his ride, Lachlan raised around $140,000 AUD for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, helping support their mission to provide books and learning resources to Indigenous children living in remote communities around Australia. Even though his ride has come to an end, you can still donate here to enable their work.
