Massachusetts once again took the lead for the state with the largest proportion of schools in the top 25% of the Best High Schools rankings. Nearly 47% of its eligible schools are in the top quarter of the national rankings, followed by New Jersey with 44.1% and Maryland at 42.7%
Among the top 200 on the new list were six schools from Massachusetts
The highest-ranking Massachusetts school was Boston Latin School, which came in at No. 44 on the list. It was followed by Belmont High School at No. 138, Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School in Hadley at No. 139, The Bromfield School in Harvard at No. 161, Lexington High School at No. 167 and Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden at No. 169
The ranking looked at more than 27,000 schools in total, according to U.S. News & World Report. Each school was ranked based on six factors: college readiness, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth and graduation rate. Each factor carried a different weight in a school’s overall performance, with college readiness – which is measured by the proportion of 12th-grade students who earned a qualifying score on Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams — accounting for 30% of the overall score.
