For the first time in 19 years, Mike Tomlin won’t be wearing a coach’s headset on the sidelines. After mutually parting ways with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this year, Tomlin will be at the analyst desk for NBC. The former Super Bowl champion will be one of the pundits on Football Night in America. It’s going to be a drastic change for the revered NFL ex-head coach

How does Tomlin feel about the transition? Well, the former Steelers coach is understandably nervous. Tomlin went on the Jimmy Fallow show as part of the promotion for the show. There, the NFL legend said that he’s feeling the jitters, noting that it’s the first time in a long while that he’s felt like a novice again
“Everyone’s watching,” Tomlin told Fallon. “It’s been a while since I’ve been a novice, and like, I got a little anxiety. I’m nervous, and that feels good. The butterflies, that performance anxiety? Yeah. I feel good about it.”

It has been a while since Tomlin was anything other than an NFL head coach. He was the head coach of the Steelers from 2007 to 2026, ushering in one of most successful eras in franchise. He was one of the best head coaches in the league, never incurring a losing season in his 19 years of coaching in the league. He was the most tenured head coach in the league at the time of his departure

While Tomlin isn’t going to be on the NFL sideline anytime soon, the head coach still hasn’t ruled out a return to coaching at some point. Other coaches have taken a one or two year sabbatical after leaving their previous teams before coaching again. That’s exactly what Mike McCarthy, Tomlin’s replacement in Pittsburgh, did: he took a one-year break after being let go by the Cowboys before taking the Steelers job
For now, though, Tomlin seems content with watching the chaos of the NFL from behind the analyst desk. It will be interesting to see how the former Steelers coach transitions into his new job
